Massive Change at UPW
It was nearly 9 years ago when I had my first UPW experience facilitated by Lipi and Darren Bagshaw who at that time ran an Anthony Robbins and Associates franchise in Alberta, Canada. It absolutely changed my life.
“Unleash the Power Within” is the name of an outstandingly transformational program, designed by Tony Robbins many years ago. And it still works as powerfully today. If not more. Even if you did the seminar 9 years ago, and have been using much of the technology, repeating this seminar takes you to a new, higher level, each time. Even if you did it yearly. Monthly! It would just accelerate your life beyond your dreams!
My friend Nikki Keogh invited me to attend the UPW weekend on the 4th to the 7th of July 2003 at the ExCel Centre in London, England. It would be the first time I’d see Tony Robbins ‘live and in-person’, so of course I jumped at the chance to go.
I had no particular expectations of the weekend. I simply knew it would change my life. My only goal was to have fun, and to play full out. Which I did. I had a blast!
As always, the seminar began with high energy, loud music, dancing and clapping. Being at a Tony Robbins seminar is like attending a fantastic pop concert, with the advantage of learning a whole lot that will positively and dynamicly shape your life almost automatically. Simply by being there, and participating, you are bound to get better results than you would have, if you spent the weekend any other way.
With all that Tony teaches, you’d think “How on earth will I absorb everything?” You do. Somehow. You see, Tony is a master at teaching. He keeps you alive, awake, and interested. He gets you moving, so you connect physically and emotionally to the information, not just mentally. What you learn, sticks. You cannot NOT learn at this seminar.
Okay, now this one had me anxious for the weeks leading up to the seminar. I had to face a great bugbear fear of mine – fire. I never in my life imagined I’d have the opportunity to take this challenge, and felt I ‘had’ to do it. However, as the days went on, I was getting too wrapped up in the idea of the Firewalk. In order to relax about it, I decided that I didn’t have to do it, if it didn’t feel right at the time.
Tony prepares you for anything
I should have realised, that when you let Tony teach you something, you are raring to pounce on it. I found myself learning the technique and feeling confident about the firewalk. It would be a piece of cake.
But it’s not about the Firewalk
The Firewalk is meant to be a metaphor. It’s not about walking across a hot bed of coals. It’s not about mind over matter at UPW. It’s about using the Firewalk as a metaphor for your life. What is it you fear the most? How do you deal with it?
As we did the work to discover our greatest fears which the firewalk would represent to us, I realized something.
For me, the most powerful thing would be, to NOT do the Firewalk! This got me quite confused. Inwardly, I wanted to do the firewalk. My ego wanted to tell people, “yah, I did that… it was a breeze…”
As it turned out, my greatest fear was rejection. Being different. Taking the road less travelled. Being myself. Not conforming, and being ridiculed. Not being good enough for others. Not meeting their expectations of me. This fear has driven me to be someone else. Someone that fits in. Someone that is acceptable, agreeable, doesn’t cause waves. This has made me dreadfully unhappy.
So, doing the Firewalk along with 9,000 others at that time would only feed the fear. I was more afraid of being the only one who didn’t follow the crowd. Doing the Firewalk in this case would have actually reinforced the fear, instead of liberated me.
I faced my fear, and walked my own way
I walked the route towards the fires with everyone, getting in the appropriate state. Once at the fire, I claimed my right to be me, and told the assistants:
“I have chosen not to do the firewalk.” Completely confident and utterly proud of myself, I walked on the cool grass beside the fire, as determinedly as I would had it been on the coals. I celebrated my success in as equally a heightened state as those who traversed the coals. I felt purely committed and strong within myself. I had defied society. I accepted myself as doing the Walk in my Own way.
I create my own unique path, regardless of what others think or say about me. I know what I am here to do, and I will do it My Way.
Incidentally, now that I know how to do the Firewalk, I’d like to do it. But when I do, it will be in a sacred tribal setting. That is how I choose to do the firewalk.
It only gets better
One would have thought that a firewalk would be the highlight of a program. With Tony, it only is a jumpstart to even more powerful learning.
Something I only meekly hoped for, amidst about 2 years of pulling myself this way and that, only dabbling into things, never committing to anything ‘big’, I finally got complete and utter clarity on the direction of my career. Not only have I decided what I want to do, with Tony’s help, I have figured out ‘how’. No matter what your issues are, or what situation you’re in, Tony’s methods enable you to figure out for yourself what is best for you.
I am amazed by the inner power I’ve discovered since this seminar. All as a result of attending UPW, I’m now ripe and ready to make things happen!
If ever you have a chance to attend an Anthony Robbins seminar, be it seeing him live and in-person, or one of the video seminars I saw years ago, snap up the chance! In fact, even listening to his CDs is bound to give you an awesome boost. Give it a go! Listen with an open mind, and I believe you will benefit in a big way!
